Graphene ‘Miracle Material’ Could Be A TREATMENT For Mesothelioma

Graphene ‘Miracle Material’ Could Be A TREATMENT For Mesothelioma…Graphene is a New Research That May Help Mesothelioma Cancer Patients. It is said that the new treatment can stop tumors from asbestos as many as three in four mesothelioma tumors cases.

Asbestos is one of those materials which are so harmful when exposure. The dangerous substance can take decades to show any medical manifestation. At that point any conventional cancer treatments offer no or little hope to terminal patients. Mesothelioma is a rare aggressive cancer, incurable that occurs after asbestos fibers exposure and lodged in our lungs. It takes 20–50 years to be diagnosed. At that point the cancer became sadly incurable with low life survival rate.

Cancer stem cells are defined as those cells within a tumor that can self-renew. They are differentiate into cancer cells and form tumors. Conventional treatments known for Mesothelioma treatment like chemotherapy and radiotherapy; only reduce out the bulk of the tumor.

The patient can survive for a longer life but the cancer cells itself is not killed or totally removed. The cancer stem cells – a residue can survive and grow. These residual cancer stem cells after the conventional Mesothelioma treatment caused the Mesothelioma tumor to recurrence and metastasis. Mesothelioma Cancer cells spreads to other parts of the body. This spreading is responsible for 90% of Mesothelioma cancer deaths. So the aim of any treatment is to prevent any residual cells to survive. This off course will make a huge difference to patient survival. Cancer stem cells are also responsible for any cancer drug resistance, causing a significant failed treatment of cancer.

Researchers team from the University of Manchester in the UK led by Michael Lisanti, a professor in Manchester’s Institute of Cancer Sciences, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, – describes a modified version of graphene (graphene oxide) as an anticancer material. Graphene do selective target on cancer stem cells and gave a hope. The possibility of using graphene not only to shrink tumors but also to prevent recurrence and metastasis.
A new study shows that this graphene – which is a nanomaterial made of extremely thin flakes of carbon that are only one atom thick may prevented cancer stem cells forming tumor-spheres across many types of cancer.This is done by inhibiting several important signal pathways on the cells’ surfaces.

Graphene oxide flakes prevented cancer stem cells forming tumor-spheres;

Graphene strips; the two-dimensional material, may be poised to revolutionize much of materials science. Two anticancer drugs were developed from Graphene strips as a flying carpet. Each drug is targeted to a distinct part of the cell sequentially where it will be most effective.
Graphene was effective against six different cancer types;

Graphene strips are performed better when either drug in isolation. It has successfully proved itself in the lab against six different kinds of cancer cells. These six types of cancer are; breast, pancreatic, lung, brain, ovarian and prostate. Flaked Graphene oxide preferentially hits these cancers right in the stem cells. It prevent forming these cells  instead forcing them to differentiate into non cancer stem cells. Flaked Graphene oxide is often responsible sticking around in the cell after the radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery therapy. Not to reseed a tumor just when it looks like it was defeated. The Graphene seemed to have a preventive effect of Mesothelioma cancer recurrence and metastasis. This new approach to treating malignant mesothelioma is incredibly important to continue working towards newer and more effective ways to treat malignant mesothelioma in addition to all cancers.

New Approaches To Treating Malignant Mesothelioma;

Any successful treatment of a serious disease such as malignant mesothelioma depends mainly on how early a diagnosis can be made. The traditional methods of treating malignant mesothelioma we know are not enough to give the patient a complete cure or prolong his expectations. Unfortunately, the traditional methods; surgical procedures, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments have shown limited success. The hope on new approaches to treating Malignant Mesothelioma is focusing on the development of new treatment modalities.
